Clearwater Marine Aquarium is full of all sorts of exciting ocean animals! From lionfish to triggerfish, there are a number of different sea creatures that are worth learning about.

Lionfish
HABITAT
Warm marine waters around coral reefs, caves, or rocky areas
THREATS
Destruction of coral reefs, ocean pollution, and pet trade
DIET
Smaller fish, crab, shrimp, and plankton
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION
Native to the Red Sea across the Indian Ocean to Austral- ia and the Pacific Ocean. Invasive to the At- lantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea.

Did You Know…

Red Lionfish are nocturnal ambush predators.
Their distinctive appearance is a warning to potential predators that their grooved spines are equipped with venom which can cripple a predator.
Young lionfish, referred to as “young fry,” are almost transparent. They develop their beautiful colors and patterns as they mature.
Physical description: Complex pattern of red, black, brown, and white spots, lines, and swirls. Long, fanlike dorsal, pectoral, and anal fins.
