For the Love of a Manatee: From Rescue and Rehabilitation to Research and Conservation
What does it take to give a manatee a second chance—and to help ensure a future for manatees in the wild?
In this presentation, Jenn Galbraith, Research Scientist and Coordinator for the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) Post Release Monitoring with Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute (CMARI), will take members behind the scenes of the broader mission of manatee conservation at CMARI. Beginning with rescue, rehabilitation, and release, the presentation will explore how caring for individual animals is connected to a much larger effort to understand and protect manatees and the ecosystems they depend on.
The presentation will highlight CMARI’s work through the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership, including post-release monitoring; research and conservation efforts in Florida’s springs and other critical habitats; and decades of field research and conservation across the Wider Caribbean, including Belize, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba.
From satellite tracking and health assessments to habitat research, long-term monitoring, and community-based conservation, members will discover how science and animal care work together to protect manatees throughout their lives.
Ultimately, the story of each rescued manatee is part of something much bigger: a commitment to protecting a species, restoring the habitats it needs to survive, and building partnerships that extend from Florida to the Caribbean—all for the love of a manatee.
