Clearwater Marine Aquarium is heartbroken to share the passing of Star, a beloved member of our dolphin family. On May 1, 2026, Star began showing signs of discomfort. Despite the exhaustive, around-the-clock efforts of our veterinary team, animal care specialists, and independent experts to provide her with the highest level of supportive care and intervention, her condition declined. Star passed away on the morning of May 8, 2026.

Star was welcomed at Clearwater Marine Aquarium along with several other animals from the Miami Seaquarium on December 18, 2025, after the facility in Miami closed to the public. Star was born in 1999 under human care and lacked the necessary skills to survive in the wild. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) approved a permit to transport her to CMA.

Star held a special place in our hearts and forged a bond with our team as a member of our CMA family. Her passing leaves a profound impact on each of us.

Star

Since arriving at CMA in December 2025, Star and Squirt have been acclimating well to their new habitat and have been successfully introduced to the other resident bottlenose dolphins and rough-toothed dolphins.

Did You Know…

Star seems to enjoy enrichment activities with balls and knows many ball-playing behaviors.
CMA welcomed Star after she needed a new home when her former facility closed to the public in 2025.
Give wild dolphins space and never approach, feed or touch an animal in the wild. Every interaction can have a lasting impact.
Star has a close connection to Squirt, who also lived with Star in Miami.
